December 11 is widely celebrated around the world as International Mountain Day<\/b><\/span>. This date was officially established in January 2003 by a resolution of the 57th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n

The United Nations designated this day to draw global attention to the challenges of developing mountainous regions and the need to support populations living in these areas. Throughout the week, mountain enthusiast communities and environmental organizations hold educational and recreational activities. The resolution dedicated to this day highlights the particular importance of measures aimed at the sustainable development of mountainous areas<\/b><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Mountains cover more than one quarter of the Earth\u2019s land surface and play a vital role in global sustainable economic development. They are also home to nearly 10 percent of the world\u2019s population.<\/p>\n
